About the Purple Edition

Purple is a favourite on tip-run, and over the ten-odd years since the technique took hold, results have made “purple catches” a settled fact. Daybreak already has purple-family colours such as Ruru Purple; these five add UV colour or glow on top of it. Five colours on each of four sizes — JetChaser 2.5 and 2.6, Daybreak 3.3 and 4.0 — shipping since late August.

The Five Colours

Here is the make-up of the five colours, one by one. Yellow Aji Purple: a purple base with a yellow aji (horse-mackerel) pattern, purple back, matte purple head. It finishes, with a pattern, the “purple base” that was indispensable to daytime tip-run even before Daybreak existed. Salty Purple was devised by a Keystone evangelist: a Mexico Rainbow base — an iridescent pattern — a purple back, and Galaxy Glow (dot glow) over the top. Pale purple overall, purple head too. It gets good responses from bigfin reef squid holding on bait in daylight, and in deep water the glow on its back appeals to the squid around it when you jerk. Purple Sardine: silver base, purple back, purple head, with sardine dots. It comes from the experience that, as the water cools, pale colours like silver and Air Lagoon start to draw responses.

UV Red Purple has a UV-type red painted on the base, so it shows colour under ultraviolet even in dark water. Purple back, matte red head. Its moment is when the light drops — dawn, dusk, overcast. Orange Aji Purple: a UV-type orange base, purple back, orange head. It works in low light in the same way, and the maker's own “actually, our recommendation” is night tip-run: last year too, orange often drew responses in the second half of the night. Of the five, two are UV, one is glow, and the remaining two are separated by the brightness of the base. UV is a paint that takes in ultraviolet and returns visible light; it is distinct from phosphorescent glow, which emits light of its own.

The Lure's Role

Function

The same five colours ride on four sizes of different character. JetChaser size 2.5 (20g) and 2.6 (22g) is a tiny-bodied egi built to work the 10–20 m shallows on light tackle; the hook is a KS06 despite the 2.5-class size, and it also serves for shore tip-run, cast from the bank. Daybreak size 3.3 (35g) and 4.0 (39g) is a dedicated tip-run egi: the low resistance of its hard urethane foam body sinks fast and jerks light. The 3.3 puts a KS06 hook on an EgiSharp 3.5 body; the 4.0 carries the heavy-gauge KS10, and where 39g is not enough for the depth and current you can add a mask sinker. Choose how to sink it by size and weight, and how to show it by the five colours.

In the field

Here is how the maker recommends using them. Daytime: Yellow Aji Purple and Salty Purple. When the light drops — dawn, dusk, overcast: UV Red Purple and Orange Aji Purple. Night: Orange Aji Purple. When the water is cooling and the squid are shifting to deeper ground: Purple Sardine — and in the deep, the glow of Salty Purple works too. The five are laid out along three axes: time of day, light, and water temperature.

From the Workshop in Arita

The egi used in this video are genuine made-in-Japan products, crafted at KEYSTONE's own factory in Arita, Saga Prefecture — the town of Arita porcelain. We put our soul into each and every egi.
