KS Lead Sutte

Lead Sutte Game — Action Video Guide

Built for light-tackle lead sutte (ika-metal) fishing

The lead sutte (ika-metal) game that is exploding in popularity all across Japan! Working a lead sutte on light tackle and getting the squid to grab it, then setting the hook the instant the squid touches the sutte — that thrill, combined with the fun of feeling every pull on light tackle, is exactly why the lead sutte game is such a huge trend right now. KeyStone has manufactured and sold lead sutte for professional fishermen for many years, but we developed and refined this one for light-tackle anglers, releasing it as a dedicated lead-sutte-game sutte of special quality that packs in the wisdom and experience of working fishermen. KS = KeyStone, KenSaki

The powerful glow of the KS Lead Sutte

The answer from KeyStone, after years of researching squid fishing from both boat and shore. For pencil squids (tsutsu-ika) such as swordtip squid (kensaki-ika) and spear squid (yari-ika), glow (luminescence) works. We applied the same special super-glow (luminescent) coating technology used in our Haifukugata and hard-foam floating sutte series, achieving the same strength and beauty of glow in this KS Lead Sutte. Rather than making only part of it glow, the entire surface glows for greater appeal. Furthermore, because the whole body lights up, the contrast created by the differing cloth colors is expressed even more strongly. The luminescent paint stores light easily even from a small amount, so it can be made to glow sufficiently by sunlight or by the fishing lights (isaribi) used at night. *Deep colors such as All Red, Red/Green, and Red/Green × Purple do not transmit light, so their glow is weak.

Our goal: a "dancing lead sutte"

As its name suggests, the lead sutte has a body made of lead. Because of this, it cannot be drifted softly through the water like an ordinary floating sutte. What we aimed for was a "dancing lead sutte." We tested the body's center of gravity in a variety of balances and finished it with the shape and balance that made it dance the best. A balance that handles a wide range of actions — high-speed action, shaking at the depth where the squid are holding, and lift & fall.

"Front-weighted balance"

The center of gravity of the KS Lead Sutte is front-weighted. Not center balance, and not rear balance. There is a reason for this: as noted above, it lets the sutte dance easily and drop quickly to the target depth — but that is not all. We believe it is extremely strong against contact from squid during the fall. Even with a squid punch or a sideways grab, the front-balance effect makes the hooking rate completely different. The fact that fish often auto-hook on HIT during the fall is likely thanks to this front-weighted balance effect as well.

Crown hooks (kanna) for slender-legged swordtip squid (kensaki-ika) and spear squid (yari-ika)

KeyStone has more than 20 specifications of crown hooks (kanna) for squid fishing. Among them, for this model we adopted the hook bend (yari-ika hook, kensaki hook) that we consider best suited to swordtip squid (kensaki-ika) and spear squid (yari-ika). Compared with squid such as bigfin reef squid (aori-ika), the pencil squids (tsutsu-ika) have slender legs, and depending on how the hook is bent we believe you can get more drops or poorer hook-ups. We obsess over the hook bend, the thickness of each individual hook, and even the number of hooks. This is the KeyStone way. *To match the balance of each size (No.), the thickness of each hook and the number of hooks may vary slightly. Please note that not all sizes (No.) use the same type of crown hook.

Does a lead sutte need cotton?

Does a lead sutte need cotton, or does it not? After running a wide range of tests, the KS Lead Sutte is wrapped with no cotton. The whole point of cotton is "cotton to keep the squid grabbing on for even a little longer," and in this style of fishing — where you set the hook the instant the squid touches — we concluded it is not necessary. Also, considering a light-tackle fishing style, dropping the lead sutte quickly to the target depth requires reducing water resistance, and for these two reasons, no cotton is wrapped on it.

Differences in glow by color

The KS Lead Sutte currently comes in 8 colors. Each carefully selected color has meaning. Wrapped entirely in special super-glow, the KS Lead Sutte glows strongly all over. Because the whole body glows, the differences in cloth color split it into light and dark. With Red/White, the red part glows weakly and the white part glows strongly, so even a single Red/White produces a contrast of glow. Do you deliberately appeal aggressively, like Red Sen, or make it glow only faintly, like Red/Green or All Red? You can choose how you appeal to the squid not only by the difference in color, but also by the difference in glow!
