[Daybreak New Colors] Red Aji Orange & Ruru Purple Field Report — Cracking Autumn Squid at Dawn Mazume
Two new colors join the Daybreak® lineup! "Red Aji Orange," strong at dawn and dusk mazume, and "Ruru Purple," an all-around color you can use in any situation. Ahead of the peak of the autumn squid season, we ran a field test. Here is a thorough report on their hit-after-hit performance.
Daybreak's Two New Colors — Dawn/Dusk Mazume and an All-Around Color
Red Aji Orange
A color specialized for dawn mazume, dusk mazume, and overcast skies. A combination of red and orange that boosts the squid's visibility of the lure in low light and stimulates their activity.
- Low light of dawn mazume
- Low light of dusk mazume
- Overcast and rainy conditions
- Stained, murky current
Ruru Purple
An all-around color you can use in any situation. An all-rounder that delivers consistent results regardless of clear or overcast skies or time of day.
- Works even under clear skies

- When in doubt, this color
Field Report — Cracking Dawn Mazume Before Sunrise
This field test took place at dawn mazume in mid-October. We entered the water 30 minutes before sunrise and tested the ability of the two new colors in the low light.
Phase 1: Before Sunrise — Red Aji Orange Explodes
With the sun not yet fully up, we deployed Red Aji Orange. There was a clear bite on the very first cast, and a good-sized autumn squid hit.
In the low light, the red and orange color scheme boosted the squid's visibility of the lure, and we managed to draw a bite before their wariness kicked in. We felt firsthand the ability of this dawn-mazume-specialized color.
Phase 2: After Sunrise — Ruru Purple's Versatility
As the sun began to rise, the response to Red Aji Orange dulled somewhat. Here we switched to Ruru Purple.
Even in the brighter conditions after sunrise, results were steady. Purple-based colors kept drawing the squid's interest whether in light or shadow.
Time-of-Day Selection Strategy
Here we introduce the color selection pattern for the two new colors that we established during this field test.
Dawn Mazume (Low Light)
Red Aji Orange as the first choice. A proven performer, combining visibility with activity stimulation.
Daytime (Clear Skies)
Steady results with Ruru Purple. Versatility that keeps its visibility even in bright conditions.
Overcast / Rain
Red Aji Orange is effective. Boosting visibility in low light.
Dusk Mazume
Red Aji Orange again. Just like at dawn, it shows its power in low light.
The Importance of Color Rotation
What this field test drove home once again is the importance of color rotation to match the conditions.
- Low light of dawn mazume → target high-activity squid with Red Aji Orange
- Bright conditions after sunrise → maintain steady results with Ruru Purple
- When there is no response after 5–10 casts → change color immediately
- Combining with existing colors → rotate with an eye on the base color too
Because the Daybreak® series shares a common design across all colors, there is no change in sink speed or action when you switch colors. Stress-free rotation is possible.
Release Information — Toward the Peak of the Autumn Squid Season
The two colors, Red Aji Orange and Ruru Purple, are scheduled for release from late October to early November 2025.
Since the release is timed for the peak of the autumn squid season, please be sure to test their ability out on the water for yourself.
New Color Q&A
Q. In what conditions should I use Red Aji Orange?
A. It is especially effective during the low light of dawn and dusk mazume and under overcast skies. Before the sun has fully risen, the squid's visibility of the lure increases and it stimulates their activity.
Q. What are the characteristics of Ruru Purple?
A. It is an all-around color you can use in any situation. Regardless of clear or overcast skies or time of day, you can expect consistent results, so when you are unsure, starting with this color first is our recommendation.
Q. How does it differ from the existing Daybreak®?
A. The body design, sink speed, and action are all the same. The only difference is the color, so rotation with existing colors goes smoothly.
Q. When will the new colors be released?
A. They are scheduled for release from late October to early November 2025. The release is timed for the peak of the autumn squid season.
Q. What sizes will be available?
A. As with the existing Daybreak® series, we plan to offer multiple sizes. Please check the product page for details.
